November 1, 2023The Las Vegas Wash, a drainage channel that feeds into Lake Mead, provided the opportune corridor for a desired trail. The main spine of the trail, dubbed the “Lower” Las Vegas Wash Trail, was built parallel to the waterway for most of its journey; a shorter, 3.5-mile spur, dubbed the Upper Las Vegas Wash Trail, branches off at Alexander Road. The wash itself is a mixture of concrete-lined channel and natural stream bed. The Lower Las Vegas Wash Trail stretches more than a dozen miles from North Las Vegas, through Las Vegas, and into Clark County.
Challenging Weather Conditions
CMWorks, A Kleinfelder Company, provided construction management services, including inspection, contract administration, schedule review, and material testing for the combined LV Wash projects Phases 1 and 2 concurrently under one contract. The project encountered one of the wettest summers on record, including a storm event that was an approximate 50-year storm runoff event. There was a series of major storms that affected the construction from the end of July through early September, as well as other smaller storm events. The contractor was highly impacted in its production/ efficiencies and associated required drying and cleanup/restoration work. CMWorks, A Kleinfelder Company, adapted to find ways to mitigate potential damages such as reallocating human resources to complete sections of invert or walls prior to forecasted rain. A total of 106 adverse weather days were added as a result of weather.
Project Results
With an outstanding recreational gem at either end, the trail is heavily used. On its northern end, Craig Ranch Regional Park, which opened in 2013, was once a golf course and offers rolling terrain, community gardens, athletic fields, an elaborate playground, and one of the country’s largest skate parks. The Las Vegas Wash Trail was named “Trail of the Month” by the Rails to Trails Conservancy in April 2015.
